Emotional Intelligence: Concepts, and their utilities and application in administration and governance.
Before defining Emotional Intelligence, it is necessary to understand what emotions actually are.
Emotions are an inborn, unbidden, natural quality. Different authors have tried to define emotions in
different ways
Emotions affect performance or decision making in our day to day life whether personal or
professional. Emotions are as important to our daily activities as our body to life. Until & unless our
inner self is not working well, we will not be able to cope with things that we are facing in our
external environment.
Hence, Emotional Intelligence is to effectively & rightly understand our own emotions as well as of
others, managing emotions in us & in our relationships.
It is also viewed as a tool for achieving success through developing quality in personal & in
professional life. People with high emotional intelligence have an awareness of their feelings & can
make a balance between reason and emotions which make them good leaders and team players.
Definition: “Emotional intelligence is the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for
motivating ourselves & for managing emotions well in us and in our relationships.”
—Daniel Goleman.
President Clinton
said that “sometimes we have no control over bad things or happenings. However, what we do have
control over is how we react or respond to these bad things”. This is basically emotional intelligence.
