To be a Force of Excellence in guarding the Borders of India through highly professional, credible and efficient Border Management.

MISSION : 

1.To maintain sanctity of the Border of India through eternal vigilance.

 2.To inculcate a sense of security by harnessing co-operation of the Border Population.

 3. To effectively deal with Internal Security Challenges whenever so tasked by the Govt.

 4. To achieve an effective combat capability by absorbing leading-edge technology, state-of-the-art training and userfriendly equipment. 

5.To evolve and implement a growth-oriented Personnel Management System aimed at instilling core values to satisfy the social, economic and psychological needs of the Force personnel. 

6.To effectively assist Civil Administration in Disaster Management and provide succor to the people. 7.To effectively promote core values of Human Rights, pride and dedication to duty in the Force.


ROLE OF THE BSF :

PEACE TIME

  • Promote a sense of security among the people living in the border areas.
  • Prevent trans-border crimes, unauthorized entry into or exit from the territory of India.

  • Prevent smuggling and any other illegal activity.

WAR TIME :-

  • Holding ground in less threatened sectors so long as the main attack does not develop in a particular sector, and it is felt that the local situation is within the capability of the BSF to deal with.

  • Protection of vital installations particularly air-fields against enemy commandos/Para troopers or raids.

  • Limited aggressive action against Para military or irregular forces of the enemy within the overall plan of the Armed forces.

  • Performing special tasks connected with intelligence including raids.

  • Acting as guides in an area of responsibility where routes are known.

  • Maintenance of law and order in enemy territory administered under the control of the Army.

  • Guarding of prisoners of war cages.

  • Assistance in control of refugees.

  • Anti- infiltration duties in specified area.

Other Activities :

  1. The BSF contributes every year a number of personnel for services for UN Mission.
  2. During the Kargil conflict in May-July 1999, the BSF remained on the heights of the mountains and defended the integrity of the country with all the might at its command in unison with the Army.
  3. BSF personnel have been performing Internal Security Duty in Manipur for the last two years and have been successfully fighting insurgency in those areas.
  4. During the earthquake in Gujarat on 26th January 2001, the BSF was the first to reach out to help the distressed people.
  5. During the communal disturbances in Gujarat recently, BSF personnel went all out to restore amity and brotherhood among the people.
  6. The BSF took over the erection of the border fencing in Jammu & Kashmir and it was successful in its task despite all attempts of Pakistan to scuttle our efforts.
  7. The BSF has been defending the borders along with the army and checking infiltration on the borders during the current standoff with Pakistan.
BSF is well capable of guarding 6386.36 Km (2289.66 Km –Indo Pak Borders, 4096.7 Km Indo-BD Borders) of the International Borders (IB) and 237.2 Km of the Line of Control (LC). In addition, BSF is capable & efficient enough to take on other challenges effectively like Counter-Insurgency/Anti-Militancy/Anti-Naxal Operations, Election Duties, Law & Order Duties, UN Peace Keeping Missions, Disaster Management and National/ International level functions and any other tasks assigned by the Government of India
