Ethics vs morality ?

Ethics

  •  The Oxford English Dictionary defines ethics as the science of morals or moral principles.
  • The study of ethics is concerned with the moral principles that determine what is right or wrong conduct.
  •  However, determining what is right or wrong behaviour is not an easy task as the criterion for the same are neither absolute nor universal, but variable, depending on the person, place, and time.
  • Traditionally, ethics has undertaken to analyze, evaluate, and develop normative moral criteria for dealing with moral problems.
  • Ethics represents an attempt to systematize and rationalize morality, typically into generalized normative rules that is supposedly a solution to situations of moral uncertainty
why  Individual Ethics needed?

  • Ethics, as a set of principles, give a rational justification for behaviour.
  •  They define individual and group priorities, and in the end, they may arrive at a systematic body of moral norms, as individual and group practices get interwoven.
  • Ethics is something related to a state of mind, a way of looking at things which may develop into a pattern of behaviour or way of life and social conduct

Moral

  • The word moral(s) is derived from the Latin root moralis, which implies custom. In other words, it refers to a behaviour that is accepted or rejected due to an accepted social custom.
  • Morality is the realm of individual appreciation of the fundamental or first-principle definitions of “good” or “bad”. Morality is the public expression of one’s comprehensive doctrine, such as religion.
  •  Morality is concerned with the norms, values and beliefs embedded in social processes which define right and wrong for an individual or a community

Ethics vs Morality

Both ethics and moral define the same social reality wherein a certain body of accepted norms forms a code of conduct in society

Ethics is concerned with the study of morality and the application of reason to elucidate specific rules and principles that determine right and wrong for a given situation

Morality is concerned with the norms, values and beliefs embedded in social processes which define right and wrong for an individual or a community

Morality precedes ethics
